In this
career question, Melanie of GameRecruiter pinch
hits for Jay.
Q:
I live in
Irvine, California. 2.4 miles from Interplay, 3
miles from Westwood, about 5 miles from Blizzard, and
roughly 10 miles from Squaresoft. I have applied to each
of these companies for testing positions many times as they are literally down the street.
Each time I applied, I supplied my resume and finished the
application and test completely and accurately. These applications were spread out
from November '99 to, most recently, December 2000, and
I have had a job in testing in the Bay Area with 3do. In
short, I have not heard back from any of these
companies. Why? What am I doing wrong? Am I talking to the wrong people?
Is there a temp
agency I should contact? I am planning to attend E3, but
I feel that won't be much use as for getting a
job. Do you have any advice?
me.
A:
Without knowing how much experience you acquired from
3do, I can't intelligently comment on why you aren't getting the job.
I do empathize with your frustration over the lack of response. I don't mean to ask the obvious,
but when you applied to the aforementioned companies, did they have testing
openings? If they're not buying what you're selling, it's a wasted effort. You
mentioned that your many job applications "were spread out
from November '99 to, most recently, December 2000".
Sounds like you've submitted many times in just one
year. I've often heard from HR and hiring managers that continuously sending in
one's resume is not the way to get a job. In fact, many of them expressed
irritation in repeatedly
receiving the same resume over and over again. Companies do hold onto and
sort through resumes when needs arise. Without having all the facts on your skillset and your
job search, I can only suggest that you apply to companies who actually have
posted testing jobs rather than applying to them based on proximity.
Furthermore, to avoid their irritation, trust that they have your information on
file and will contact you if something appropriate arises. Hope this helps.
