JANUARY 2004

Q: Jay, in your opinion, what were the biggest game industry trends in 2003?

A:
More consolidation would be the biggest trend I saw. There was less demand for third party titles as more publishers focused on existing internal teams, acquiring new teams, and developing games based on larger franchises. Acquisition prices for games were driven down by an excess of content available to publishers from independent developers.

Q: Did anything not happen in 2003 that the industry expected would happen? For example, did any areas not take off as expected?

A:
I expected mobile games in the US to take off more than they did. The content is certainly there, but I have not seen the demand for it that I expected to see.

Q: What do you anticipate the big trends to be for 2004?

A: I look to 2004 to be a good year for consoles as prices continue to drop and the online play with Xbox and PS2 becomes more widespread.
