Q: I wanted to
ask a question about game development and college
education. How important is a person's grades in college
if companies just look to see if you have a degree or
not? For instance, would two "bad" grades on a
transcript affect the chances of getting a job in game
development?
Thanks, Pete
A: Here is what recruiter
Melanie Cambron says
on the matter:
Grades carry more weight closer to your graduation date
than after you've had a chance to prove yourself through
your work in the industry. Potential employers have to
use all means necessary to evaluate your competency as a
recent grad. Without successful shipped titles or
industry references, they must rely on your academic and
extracurricular accomplishments. That said, I don't
believe that a couple of bad grades on a transcript can
prevent you from gaining employment in the game
industry, unless, of course, those bad marks are in the
discipline in which you seek employment. For example, a
couple of Ds in Computer Science courses certainly won't
put you on the top of the pile for a game programming
job, however, a couple of Ds in obviously unrelated
arenas of study, like Pre-15th Century Spanish
Literature, shouldn't do much to bar your admission into
the exciting world of game development.
