July 2001
In this issue of
GIGnews.com, we've put down the controller, turned off the telly, put on
our reading glasses, and kindly asked game industry insiders for book
recommendations. (Note: When available, we've linked to Amazon and other
sources where you can learn more about and/or purchase the books). Time
to read, class....

The
Cache Memory Book
by Jim Handy
Amazon.com |
| Alex
Macris: "Today's performance optimization is
not achieved by coding in assembly language (except on
PS2 and DirectX8). The key today is leveraging the power
of cache memories as well as handling busses
bottlenecks. The functioning of cache memories is not
trivial -- this book is a great learning tool."
Editor's
note: If you missed Alex's piece, Incremental
Tessellation, then you don't know jack about
tessellating Bézier patches. And you should. Read it now.

Constraint-Based
Agents: An Architecture for Constraint-Based
Modeling and Local-Search-Based Reasoning for Planning
and Scheduling in Open and Dynamic Worlds by Alexander
Nareyek
Springer
|
Alexander
Nareyek: "The formal framework developed is
evaluated by application to the field of computer games,
which fit the problem context very well since most of
them are played in real time and provide a highly
interactive environment where environmental situations
are changing rapidly." Editor's
note: Alexander didn't actually write to say "I
recommend my book...", however, he did send us a
press release about the book (bravo! -- such author
initiative should be rewarded) and we assume he does
recommend his own book.
