Game
recruiter Melanie Cambron has seen and heard it all. We asked for her
best interviewing "don'ts" based on true stories. Believe it
or not kids, the following interviewing tips are all based on actual
incidents. No. 1 is a doozy.
Top
10 Interviewing Definite Don'ts
by Melanie Cambron
10) Don't
repeatedly adjust one's package, goodie bag and/or family jewels
during the interview.
9) Don't tell the company's relocation guy that that you
are "more interested in a job in Austin than with this
company." (In this case, this was particularly bad
considering there was no offer from the company in Austin.)
8) Don't spontaneously bring up and discuss in detail your
family's history of alcoholism.
7) Don't tell the VP that the recruiter, who got you this
interview, is representing you to "the rest of the free
world."
6) Don't tell the would-have-been new boss that "yes, my
wife and I are ready to move" when your wife doesn't even know
you're interviewing for a new job in a new city. As in this case, wife
would not move.
5) Don't
miss a
confirmed phone interview because "I crashed at my girlfriend's
place."
4) Don't, when 3 hours into the interview for an Art Director
position at a large
developer suddenly proclaim "hell, I can't manage 3 people...let
alone 30."
3) Don't compulsively talk about getting out of the state in
which you currently
reside. Couple this with nervously looking out the window and you look
like a felon on the lam.
2) Don't
-- after the HR person comes to pick you up at your hotel, beats on
your hotel door, phones your room repeatedly, confirms with the front
desk that you did, in fact, check in -- show up 2 hours late for an
interview because "I overslept."
1) And, finally, don't ask "how long's this gonna take
'cause my girlfriend is waiting in the car?"
